I'd like to thank everyone who came out to support Four out of Three this past weekend. We definitely had fun and I know a lot of you guys did. So, what did prepping for this concert entail? A lot of prayer and a lot of practise. Getting a band together especially with people that half know what they are doing is a pretty tough thing. I've always had this mentality that I'd hopefully be working with people who already know what they're doing and I would just be told what to play. That would be much easier. But because this was something that I had an idea about, it felt like it was my responsibility to undertake the immense task of coming up with arrangements and songs to play. Ultimately, it was also difficult to work with a lead guitarist-turned-bassist this time around but everyone was awesome and was willing to learn including myself on how to play together in a band. We also just started off as three guys before taking on Ivan as our keyboardist. But man, did adding the keyboard add a whole new dimension to the band even though at one practise, Ivan had to imagine that he was playing the keyboard because me being the genius of owning the keyboard (it was bought in HK so different wattage-requiring transformer etc...) forgot to bring the adapter.
Of course in the end, through some pain and toil, of having leon join us for one practise to him not feeling up to the part of singing with us, and finally sweating buckets of saline solution, it was the big day of the 26th. After praying tons and prepping for this day, somehow, the excitement still wasn't there yet but in the end, moments before 8:15pm, I think the guys (and gal) finally got excited and even a little nervous. Song after song however, something seemed to make sense to me at least, admist the sweat, adrenaline, heat, lights, bopping asian heads (majority of them at least), and speeding drum rhythms, something felt right. I was watching God's answers to me in the past few months unfold before my eyes and as people listened to what I had to say about questioning ourselves and looking inside us, beyond all doubt and certainty, God was working.
It is pretty amazing to see how things work together for the good of those who love God. Sometimes, its just a matter of searching and pushing ourselves a little further and to know as Bono once said, "God has already blessed the things you are going to do, knowing that you are doing it for Him."
So anymore thoughts on purpose in music? It's still a vocation to a certain degree and whether or not I will become a producer/musician type person or be dealing with clients who want another patio in their summer home, ultimately, music will always be there and so will the people who need to hear it.
